The local DFW chapter of AIGA, a Professional Group for Design, hosts an annual project where its members would come together and create designs for a functional card deck.

Using the 5 brand colors, black and white, no tints or gradients, we get to design the sea creature to fill the Go-Fish deck.

In a subconscious brainstorming moment, I thought about using typography since I am
fluent in English, Chinese and some Spanish.

Lo and behold -- Eureka!

This seahorse is a play on the form for its
Chinese character which also can be directly
translated to “sea” and “horse.”

As I did my research on my sea creature, I
found the rib cages to be extravagant and
intricate. I wanted to keep a minimalist look
as the card size may not handle all the little
boxes very well.

With all the assets created, I played around with placement and elements of design to find the most suitable layout for Sea Biscuit.
